NonLANDLINE vs. LANDLINE

The ooma™ system is flexible enough to work with or without a basic landline. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a regular home phone. Best of all, you can drop your landline at any time. Keep in mind that if you wish to move your current phone number to ooma, you’ll need to allow three weeks for porting, and a one-time porting fee may apply. Customers who keep an integrated landline will enjoy absolute reliability during Internet or power outages and get traditional 911 service. Those who choose to cut the cord from the phone company will save even more!

Using ooma without a landline

Your landline is one way to route calls from your home phone to another number. Your high-speed internet connection can do the same thing using a technology called VoIP (which is tech-talk for Voice over Internet Protocol). Simply put, you can send calls over the internet in the same way you'd send email. Our state-of-the-art encryption  means all your calls are private and secure. There is no need to provision your line if you are choosing to use ooma without a landline configuration.

Using ooma with a landline

To maximize your savings, we recommend that you call your phone company and cancel your long-distance service and see if there is a lower-cost local calling package. If you plan on using ooma with a landline, we require a flat-rate calling plan. Caller-ID is optional, and all other features are unnecessary.

If you decide to upgrade to ooma Premier after the 60-day trial, we will help you provision your line and remove features that are redundant and/or interfere with the operation of your ooma system. In addition, ooma will add call forward busy (CFB), which results in a nominal monthly charge from your landline phone company (typically around $5 per month), which is necessary for the Instant Second Line to function properly.

The following list of enhanced features will be automatically removed when ooma provisions your line, if you choose to upgrade to ooma Premier:

1.       voicemail

2.       call-waiting

3.       call forwarding

Please note that in order to prevent unexpected changes to bundles, ooma will not alter your local calling package, your caller-ID subscription (which you will continue to get through your landline phone company), or your long-distance carrier.

If you decide not to continue the enhanced ooma Premier experience and to only keep ooma Core, and would like to re-establish some of those services that were previously removed,  you may contact your phone company. Remember that those services provided by the local phone company come with a charge. We are confident you will rather keep ooma Premier!
